Most interview questions in India repeat across companies, cities and industries, which means you can prepare properly instead of improvising. What changes is who is asking. The technical round wants evidence that you can do the work; the HR round wants evidence that you will join, stay and fit in.
This is the single most mishandled question in the HR round. A weak answer: My manager does not give me good projects and there is a lot of politics. Even if it is true, it makes the interviewer wonder what you will say about them in a year.
Rewrite it around what you are moving towards. For Arjun, a support engineer in Noida: I have handled L1 tickets for three years and I am good at it, but the growth path in my current team goes towards team-lead responsibilities rather than deeper technical work. This role is on the product engineering side, which is the direction I want. If money genuinely is the reason, you can say so once, briefly, and then attach a second reason. Interviewers respect honesty far more than a transparently invented story.
For strengths, pick two and attach a specific incident to each. Saying I am a hard worker and a good team player is what everyone says. Saying I am good at breaking a vague requirement into a checklist. When our client changed the reporting format two days before go-live, I listed the twelve screens affected and we shipped on time is something only you can say.
For weaknesses, do not use the fake ones. I am a perfectionist and I work too hard are treated as non-answers by every experienced interviewer in the country. Name a real, non-fatal weakness and show the correction: I used to take on extra work rather than say no, which meant two deliveries slipped last year. Since then I keep a written list of commitments and I check with my lead before accepting anything new. Never name a weakness that is the core of the job, such as poor communication for a client-facing role.
The interviewer is checking whether you will leave in eight months. Do not answer with a job title at another company, and do not say in your chair, sir, which lands badly more often than people think. Keep it capability-focused: In five years I would like to be handling a module end to end, including requirement discussions with the client, and mentoring one or two juniors. I would rather grow technically first and take people responsibility after that. If you are planning higher studies or a government exam, be careful, because this is exactly what the question is designed to surface.
Treat this as a summary, not a plea. Three sentences: what the role needs, what you have done that matches, and what you bring extra. For a candidate applying to a Chennai fintech: The job description focuses on payment reconciliation and API integrations. I have spent two years on exactly that for a payments client, including handling settlement mismatches at month end. I also have working knowledge of Tamil and Hindi, which helps when I speak to merchant support teams directly.
Freshers get asked about percentage, backlogs and year of passing. Experienced candidates get asked about employment gaps. Answer both plainly and without apology. I had two backlogs in the fifth semester, in Microprocessors and Network Theory. I cleared both, and my final aggregate was 68 percent. Or: There is a seven-month gap in 2023. My father was unwell and I was the only family member in Jaipur. During that period I completed a data analytics course and I have the certificate with me. Hiding a gap that will appear in background verification is far more damaging than explaining it.
These usually come at the end of the HR round and they decide whether an offer is made. Know your numbers cold: fixed, variable, and any retention bonus with a clawback. When asked for expectations, give a range with a reason rather than a single figure or a limp as per company norms. When asked about notice period, state the official number and the realistic number separately, and mention buyout if your company permits it.
If you have another offer in hand, you may mention that you are in discussion elsewhere, but do not fabricate one. Indian recruitment circles in any given city are smaller than candidates assume, and an invented offer is often checked.
Always say yes. Having nothing to ask reads as having nothing at stake. Ask about the team structure, what the first three months look like, and how performance is reviewed. Save the questions about leave policy and work from home for after the offer discussion begins.
Write your answers out once, in your own words, and say them aloud twice. Prepared does not mean memorised. It means you have already decided what you think, so the interview is just a conversation about it.
