A fresher's resume gets less attention than an experienced one, not more. There is no work history to weigh, so the screener looks for reasons to reject quickly. Most freshers hand her those reasons on the first page. Here are the mistakes that do the most damage, and exactly what to write instead.
Nearly every fresher resume in India opens with some version of: seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation to utilise my skills. It is the single most skipped block on the page. It tells the reader nothing, and worse, it signals that you copied a template.
Replace it with a factual summary. B.Com graduate, 2026, Savitribai Phule Pune University. Six-month internship in accounts payable at a logistics firm, processed vendor invoices in Tally. Comfortable with Excel lookups and pivot tables. Available to join immediately, open to Pune and Mumbai. Every clause there is a fact a recruiter can act on.
A long list of every paper you studied is not a skills section. Nobody hires you because your syllabus contained Managerial Economics. Skills are things you can be asked to do on day one.
Be honest about level. If you have opened Tally twice, write basic. A fresher who overstates gets caught in the first technical question and loses the room.
Most freshers write one line: Final year project on employee management system. That line is identical across thousands of resumes. Give the project three lines instead, in a fixed shape: the problem, your specific part, the result.
Final year project, employee attendance system for a 30-staff school in Kanpur. Built the database schema and the monthly report screen; two teammates handled the front end. The school replaced its paper register and now generates attendance summaries in one click.
The words my specific part matter. Interviewers assume group projects were carried by one person, and they will probe. Naming your own contribution protects you.
Your tenth and twelfth percentages and your degree aggregate belong on the resume, in one compact line, because campus placement filters and several banking, PSU and government-linked recruiters screen on them. What they do not deserve is a quarter of the page in a large table with semester-wise breakdowns.
One line is enough: B.Tech (Mechanical), 7.8 CGPA, 2026 | Class XII 82 percent, CBSE, 2022 | Class X 88 percent, CBSE, 2020. If there is a gap year or a backlog cleared, state it plainly in the education section rather than leaving the screener to notice the missing year during the interview.
Father's name, marital status, religion, height, hobbies such as listening to music and a passport photograph pasted at the top are standard in old Indian resume templates and add nothing for most private sector roles. They consume space that should hold evidence of work. Keep date of birth only if the role has an age limit, as many government and PSU postings do.
Hobbies are worth keeping only when they are specific and verifiable. Reading is filler. Run a 400-member college quiz club, organised three inter-college events is a leadership claim with proof attached.
A surprising number of shortlisted freshers are never reached. The causes are always the same and always avoidable.
Freshers apply in bulk, which is sensible, but sending an identical file to a content writing role, a sales role and a data entry role wastes all three. You do not need a fresh resume each time. Keep one master and change three things: the title line at the top, the order of the skills so the relevant ones come first, and the project or internship you describe in most detail.
Also check the file name and the format. Send PDF, not Word. Name it Rahul_Verma_BCom_Fresher_Pune.pdf. And when you apply through a portal or by email, write two sentences in the message body naming the role and your availability, rather than sending a bare attachment.
Do not inflate an internship into a full-time job, do not extend dates to hide a gap, and do not add a certification you did not complete. Background verification for entry-level hires in India routinely covers college records, internship certificates and, once you have worked anywhere, your UAN and EPFO contribution history. A discovered mismatch ends the offer and, if the recruiter is a consultancy, quietly ends your relationship with every client on their list.
Fix these seven things in your current file this evening. A fresher resume that is honest, specific and easy to scan already places you ahead of most of the pile.
